Marc Rice Results

Windy. The 36 players who made it out to Paradise Valley for the Marc Rice, Sr. Memorial Tournament would attest to that. Although the weather was great and the course was in excellent condition, the Marc Rice would be a tough test. With quick, tricky greens and gusting 2-3 club winds for most of the day, high scores were waiting on every hole. The par-5 10th was particularly tough for many making the turn, with 8 players scoring a 10 or more on this hole. 52 and 63 feet, yes feet, were closest to the pins on Hole 3 and no, they did not make the putt. The high net scores were further proof that the course conditions played like a Major where club selection and steady putting were paramount.

At the end of the day, it took a mighty effort from Joe Young who managed to shoot the low gross of the tournament with a 79, a net 68 that was the only score in the net 60s.

Afterwards, members, spouses and families convened at Silver Dragon Restaurant for a sumptuous banquet dinner. The social festivities commenced as accolades, banter and commiseration about the tough conditions were exchanged by the club members. President Chuck Chinn addressed the gregarious crowd with a brief history of the Marc Rice, and trophies and cash prizes were awarded at the conclusion.

Marc Rice, Jr. was presented $100 in gift certificates by the club in appreciation for donating trophies for this event, and a birthday cake was served in his honor. Senior members Clayton Soohoo, the first President of OCGC, and Frank Tinloy were a welcome presence at the Marc Rice. Congratulations to Master Joe Young and to all those who won prizes.
